Nebraska uses its own form: the W-4N

Nebraska employees must give their employer a Form W-4N, the Nebraska Withholding Allowance Certificate, whenever they complete a federal W-4 (every W-4 filed since January 1, 2020). If you do not file a W-4N, your employer must withhold as if you were single with no allowances. The federal W-4's dollar amounts do not carry over to Nebraska.

How Nebraska calculates withholding for 2026

Employers subtract $2,440 a year for each withholding allowance you claim ($93.85 biweekly), then apply the Circular EN percentage tables. For a single filer or head of household the annual table withholds nothing on the first $3,430, then 2.26% to $6,710, 3.22% to $21,810, 4.21% to $31,610, 4.35% to $40,130, 4.48% to $75,370 and 4.60% above, with a base amount added at each step. Married filers have the same rates with wider bands (zero up to $8,190).

For example, a single employee earning $60,000 with one allowance has about $2,124 of Nebraska tax withheld over the year. The 2027 tables lower the top rate to 4.03%.
