What's new for 2026

  • →Step 3 uses $2,200 per child. The larger child tax credit from the 2025 tax law is built into the form.
  • →New lines on the Deductions Worksheet. Step 4(b) now accounts for qualified tips, overtime pay, passenger vehicle loan interest and the senior deduction, each with income limits. See how the 2025 tax law changes your W-4.
  • →Same five-step layout. There are no allowances, which were dropped in 2020, so there is nothing to convert from an old form.
  • →Exempt status. Claiming exempt must be renewed; for 2027, by February 16, 2027.

Do you need to submit a new one?

Probably yes if

  • You got married, divorced or had a child
  • You started a second job, or your spouse started working
  • You owed a lot, or got a big refund, last year
  • You have freelance or side income
  • You qualify for the new tips, overtime, car loan or senior deductions

Probably not if

  • You have one job and nothing has changed
  • Last year's refund or balance was small
  • You only wanted to “update for the new year”; the old form still works

Not sure? The W-4 calculator shows what to enter on each line, and the glossary entry explains the form in plain English. For state withholding forms, see the state guides.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I download the 2026 W-4?
The IRS publishes it as a free PDF at irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw4.pdf, and your employer's HR or payroll portal usually has the same form. The IRS lists the current revision as the 2026 Form W-4.
Do I need to fill out a new W-4 for 2026?
Not automatically. A W-4 you already gave your employer stays in effect until you replace it, including one on the older 2020 to 2025 layout. Submit a new one if your situation changed, if you owed or got a large refund last year, or if you want to use the new deduction lines. The exception is an exempt claim, which expires and must be renewed (by February 16, 2027 for 2027).
Is there a different W-4 for 2026 than for 2025?
The IRS issues a revised Form W-4 each year. The five-step layout that began in 2020 is unchanged for 2026. The Step 3 amounts are $2,200 per qualifying child and $500 per other dependent, and the Deductions Worksheet for Step 4(b) now has lines for qualified tips, overtime, passenger vehicle loan interest and the senior deduction.
Which parts of the W-4 do I have to complete?
Only Step 1 (name, address, Social Security number and filing status) and Step 5 (signature and date). Steps 2 to 4 are optional adjustments for multiple jobs, dependents, other income, deductions and extra withholding.
Does the W-4 control my state tax too?
No. The federal W-4 only sets federal income tax withholding. Many states have their own form, such as California's DE 4 or New York's IT-2104, and some states use the federal W-4 instead.
Can my employer refuse my W-4?
An employer must use a valid, signed W-4. If you don't give them one, they withhold as if you were single with no adjustments. If the IRS tells your employer to use different instructions, the employer has to follow those.

W4Calc is not affiliated with the IRS. The form itself is always available free from irs.gov.
