Montana uses the MW-4

Montana employees use Form MW-4, the Montana Employee's Withholding Allowance and Exemption Certificate, and the Department of Revenue recommends updating it every year. For 2026 the withholding method no longer uses Montana personal or dependent exemptions or the Montana standard and itemized deductions. It follows the federal standard deduction for your filing status.

How Montana calculates withholding for 2026

In the Employer and Information Agent Guide, annual wages up to the federal standard deduction are not withheld on: $16,100 for single filers (and married filing separately or a couple who both work), $32,200 for married filing jointly and $24,150 for head of household. Above that, 4.7% applies up to $63,600 for single filers ($127,200 joint, $95,400 head of household), and 5.65% above. The top rate fell from 5.9% to 5.65% for 2026. Amounts withheld are rounded up to the nearest dollar.

For example, a single employee paid $2,950 every two weeks ($76,700 a year) has $2,233 plus 5.65% of the amount over $63,600 withheld, about $114 per paycheck. Montana and North Dakota have a reciprocal agreement covering wages paid to each other's residents.
