Rhode Island requires its own form: the RI W-4

Employers can no longer rely on the federal W-4 for Rhode Island. Every employee must complete the RI W-4, the Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate (a 2026 version is published), showing the exemptions and allowances claimed.

How Rhode Island calculates withholding for 2026

The Division of Taxation's 2026 booklet has employers multiply the value of one exemption ($1,000 a year, or $19.23 weekly) by the exemptions and allowances claimed, subtract it from the wages, and apply a rate table that is the same for all filing statuses: 3.75% up to $82,050 a year, $3,076.88 plus 4.75% to $186,450, and $8,035.88 plus 5.99% above. If annual wages exceed $290,800 the exemption is phased out to zero. The supplemental wage rate is 5.99%.

The booklet's example: an unmarried employee paid $2,195 weekly with one exemption has $87.57 withheld a week.
