TL;DR
- ✅ $6,000 per person age 65 or older ($12,000 for a couple), tax years 2025 to 2028
- ✅ Phases out at 6% of income over $75,000 ($150,000 joint); gone by $175,000 single
- ✅ On top of the standard deduction and its age 65 add-on, itemizers included
- ✅ W-4: Deductions Worksheet lines 3a and 3b, total to Step 4(b)
Who qualifies
You qualify if you are 65 or older by the last day of the tax year and have a valid Social Security number. A spouse who is 65 or older qualifies separately. You can claim it whether you take the standard deduction or itemize, and it is claimed on Schedule 1-A of your return. Check the Schedule 1-A instructions for filing-status limits if you are married filing separately.
How the phase-out works
The deduction is reduced by 6 percent of your modified adjusted gross income over $75,000 ($150,000 if married filing jointly). Example: a single filer with $85,000 of income is $10,000 over the limit, so the deduction falls by $600, from $6,000 to $5,400. At $175,000 of income a single filer gets nothing; for a couple with both qualifying, the deduction ends at $350,000.
| Single, age 65+, income | Senior deduction |
|---|---|
| $60,000 | $6,000 |
| $75,000 | $6,000 |
| $85,000 | $5,400 |
| $100,000 | $4,500 |
| $125,000 | $3,000 |
| $175,000 and above | $0 |

Line 3a of the Deductions Worksheet
Enter $6,000 if you are 65 or older before the end of the year and your total income is under $75,000 ($150,000 if married filing jointly).
Line 3b
Enter $6,000 if your spouse is 65 or older before the end of the year and has a Social Security number valid for employment.
Line 15, then Step 4(b)
Add this to any other deductions on the worksheet, and enter the result in Step 4(b) of the W-4.
Pensions and Social Security
If your income is a pension, give your payer a Form W-4P with the same adjustments; see the W-4P guide.
The worksheet uses a simple cutoff: above the income limit it gives you nothing even though a partial deduction may still be allowed on your return. If your income is just over the line, the IRS withholding estimator can account for the phase-out.
⚠️ It is not the same as the extra standard deduction
Age 65 or older already adds $2,050 (unmarried) or $1,650 per person (married) to the standard deduction. That is built into your withholding tables; the $6,000 is on top and only reaches you through Step 4(b) or your return. See 2026 tax brackets and standard deduction.
The other new deductions are in the 2026 W-4 cheat sheet. If you are retired, also read W-4 when you retire and the W-4P guide. For the overall picture of the 2025 law, see how it changes your 2026 W-4.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the senior deduction for 2026?
$6,000 for each person who is 65 or older by the end of the tax year, so $12,000 for a married couple if both qualify. It applies for tax years 2025 through 2028.
Is it the same as the extra standard deduction for age 65?
No. The extra standard deduction ($2,050 if unmarried, $1,650 per person if married in 2026) already existed. The $6,000 senior deduction is a separate new deduction on top of it, and you can take it whether you itemize or not.
What income limit applies?
The deduction begins to phase out when modified adjusted gross income is over $75,000 ($150,000 for joint filers), reduced by 6 percent of the amount over the limit. On the W-4 Deductions Worksheet you claim it only if your total income is under the limit.
How do I claim it on my W-4?
On the 2026 Step 4(b) Deductions Worksheet, enter $6,000 on line 3a if you are 65 or older and your total income is under $75,000 ($150,000 joint). Enter $6,000 on line 3b for a spouse who is 65 or older and has a valid Social Security number. Carry the worksheet total to Step 4(b).
Do I have to change my W-4 to get it?
No. You can claim the deduction when you file your 2026 return, on Schedule 1-A. Updating the W-4 only lowers the tax withheld from each paycheck during the year.
